Shared Writing

Zak, Riley, Matthew, Deacon and Lachlan worked together to write this story.
The title is Santa and the Mouse.
They made a plan and wrote down what would be in the story.
They used describing words.

We used kid-pix to create our illustrations.
Now our story is on the classroom wall.

We are amazing!

We are amazing at building tea trays using duplo.  We carried Mrs O'Loughlin's glass of water up and down the ramp without spilling a drop!  Some trays even had lids that could adjust so they could fit different sized cups. Well done.

Philip Trusttum

Susie from the Christchurch Art Gallery came again this afternoon.

We looked at Philip Trusttum's work.
He is a New Zealand artist.
We really like his art.

We created masks in his style.
We used felt pens to make patterns and dots to decorate our masks.

Thank you Susie.

Our 150th Jubilee

This lovely news came to school today.

Here is the picture of Maisie McConnon (youngest pupil!) with the oldest surviving past pupil from Ashley school.
Her name is Zita Herbet and she is 99 years old and hoping to make it to the jubilee next year.
We were introduced to this lovely lady at Bainswood on Victoria while Maisie was visiting her great grandad!

Look what we've been doing on Fridays!

Some of us really enjoyed feeling this cornflour gloop drip and drizzle through our fingers. Some of us didn't!
Is it solid or is it liquid?
We now have new pets in our classroom.  Jorja-Rose and her Dad brought in this cool aquarium with lots of tadpoles inside!  She told us they like to eat boiled cabbage or lettuce.  They won't eat too much as they know when they are full!
Keep watching to see how they change.

Check out our cool patterned zebras!  They are going to a party in disguise!

We have also been busy thinking about what we know about birds.  We already know heaps.  We can even think of things that we don't think birds could ever possibly do! What do you think birds can't do?

One little duck went out one day...

Today Aniesia brought a little duckling to visit us at school.   It is a wild duckling that her Dad rescued after its Mum was hurt on the busy road. They are now taking care of it until it can look after itself!  They have bought special chick starter food for it to eat and they even let it swim in the bath!  It made a lot of noise while it visited us and we had to be very quiet so we didn't scare it too much. Thank you for sharing it with us Aniesia!

Exploring the sense of taste.

Wow! We tasted many things today.
Sour!   Sweet!   Bitter!  Salty!

We can experiment more.
On our back bench we have interesting things to taste.

Welcome to Term 4.

Today we started back to school for the last term of the year.
Everyone was so excited to be back in class.
There is a very busy time ahead.
We welcomed Luci to Ashley School.
So now we have 16 students in our room.

We started our look at the five senses too.
Today we talked about our sense of touch.
When the weather perks up you will find us out on the back field practicing our athletic skills.

Time for a hair cut!

Check out these cool looking wheat people!
We have been really looking after our wheat people for the last 2 weeks, making sure that they have plenty of water.
Their hair  grew so long, we decided they needed a hair cut!

We made these discoveries:
  • we couldn't grow wheat people in the fridge, it was too cold!
  • the wheat people that we put into a dark cupboard still germinated, but the plants were very yellow.
  • the wheat people we put into a plastic bag to take out most of the air didn't germinate very well. We wonder how we could take out all of the air?
  • the wheat people that did not get watered didn't germinate very well.  We think that they still got some water from the soil which helped them germinate. We want to try wheat seeds on their own.

Waimakariri Welcome Bags

Today we decorated welcome bags for our community.
We drew a picture, with crayons, to welcome people to the Rangiora district.
Mrs Robinson wrote our school name, each child's name and how old we are, onto the bag.

Taking good care with the new crayons!
